Thanks in no small part to our lacklustre council, Tameside M.B.C., Ashton-under-Lyne seems to have been stuck in a time warp for many years and things which could have been improved at relatively low cost and incrementally haven’t been.
One example of this are the giant concrete blocks greeting visitors to the town centre approaching from the train station. Apart from being an unwelcome and ugly sight, it seems it was too much trouble to even get them straight.
Yes, there is redevelopment work taking place in the town centre (Government’s Levelling Up Fund) but it's the peripheral improvements which don't appear to have a place in our council's priorities, improvements which could add to the town's image and make it a better attraction for visitors.
Add in those with influence in the town who sing from the council's song sheet and keep quiet and
Ashton desperately needs someone to fly its flag and promote it in a professional way.
